PhotoShine allows users to place their photos into 700 different templates (the trial limits you to 102). The quality of the templates varies greatly; some look pretty nice and could conceivably be printed and framed for display. Others...not so much.
Though the interface was somewhat ugly, it was uncluttered and easy enough to use. The templates that purport to make your photo look like it is featured on a magazine cover are particularly bad, with terrible text and the occasional spelling error. Many of the other templates seem to be made for teenage girls only, which is fine if you fall into that demographic, but you may find the selection a bit limited if you don't. Whether or not all of the templates were to our liking, we have to give the program a big thumbs up for its ease of use. You can easily load photos from your computer into the program and adjust them so that they are properly centered within the template. With many of the templates you can use multiple photos.
PhotoShine offers limited photo-editing capabilities: users can make a photo black and white or "old" (a poorly rendered, greenish version of sepia), or give it a sketched look. All of the editing functions are easy to locate and use. The trial version is good for 30 uses, which is ample time to master PhotoShine's simple functions. We recommend PhotoShine for novice to intermediate users; more advanced users will likely want something a bit more sophisticated.

PhotoScape is a free image editor that is designed to be fun and easy to use. It not only resizes, edits, and tweaks your digital snapshots and other image files but also creates slideshows and animated GIFs, captures screenshots, combines and splits images, and more. PhotoScape can do lots of fun things to your pictures, and its modules, circular feature selector, and video tutorials take care of the "easy" part.
We mentioned PhotoScape's unique, circular module selector, which duplicates and adds to the features on the program's toolbar, except the first tab, PhotoScape, which is the home screen (though all the tools are available on the toolbar via the toolbar menu). Another unique and interesting feature displays a photo grabbed from Flickr. You can click to change the image or turn the feature off. The Viewer tool's tree view and thumbnails helped us make quick work of finding and loading our images; the tree view persists in the upper left corner, too, when you move on to PhotoScape's various features, starting with the Editor. The Editor collects the most frequently needed editing tools in a console, but the compact view hides a plethora of options; for instance, the Filter menu has 25 items, and nine of those items have submenus. The Editor tools can do everything from adding objects to removing moles: we had quite a laugh when the random wallpaper image we opened turned out to be screen legend Anne Francis and her famous mole! But we could also paint, draw, stamp, and make mosaics out of our images.
More fun: Animated GIFs are easy to make with PhotoScape, including resizing images, changing the timing and alignment, and automatically resizing all photos to the first image's size. The Page editor includes a huge range of templates for creating frames, borders, and collages, while the pop-up Raw Converter converts RAW images from DSLR cameras into JPEGs. A cool Paper Print tool prints letters, music sheets, calendars, planners, and more. Be sure to check out the online Face Search tool. Photoinstrument provides a stunning amount of control when editing photos. Even with all the controls, the program still manages to be simple to operate, especially for those willing to invest the time.
Our first impressions were not positive since the program's interface looked slightly childish, thanks to command icons that are all various smiley faces. Fortunately
, the tutorial videos that pop up immediately prove that this is a serious tool and seriously easy. We smoothly navigated the program's functions that are represented by the previously mentioned smileys, each offering ways to shade
, erase blemishes, and even erase features (the tutorial's example shaves a few centimeters from a man's chin in a profile photo). It was a relief to find that all the tools followed the same pattern of adjusting the size and intensity with sliders and by clicking and dragging the changes on the picture.
While a little clumsy at first, the tools got easier with a little practice. The best we tested were the tools that subtly erased blemishes because they smoothly blended the skin defects into the healthy flesh. Our favorite feature was its Original button, which let us toggle between the changes and the untouched photo. Overall,
each tool was effective and simple to understand, though each required patience in perfecting.
Photoinstrument's trial does not let users save their work. While the program looks childish and takes some practice, its results were professional enough that we recommend it.
