Simple, small, and free, Google Desktop indexes your hard drive the way Google's own servers index the Web. Your search results are returned in a Web-page format that looks very similar to the Google Web site. The application's sidebar regularly updates the status of your e-mail, photos, RSS feeds, and weather.

Although the initial indexing period can crawl--especially if you have a lot of e-mail, contacts, chat transcripts, and documents for it to parse through--it's well worth the wait to be able to search any of them from a text entry box that's installed next to the Quick Launch bar. You'll still find the same basic gadget content: a music player, 

sports and stock tickers, a file shredder, and wackier items like an interactive plant. We like the Desktop sidebar's built-in to-do list, notepad, and the capability to integrate other gadgets with ease.

Version 5 is fully compatible with Windows Vista, emulating the rounded corners and translucent panels and capable of overriding the native Vista sidebar. There's also cross-indexing for multiple machines and sharing panel items directly with friends. The sharpest new feature is the preview window for search results, which saves a lot of time on clicking, opening, and closing.

Other programs with lighter feature sets may offer quicker and easier indexing and searching. Nevertheless, the efficient and feature-rich Google Desktop Search stands as yet another feather in the company's quite decorated cap.

The latest iteration of Windows Media Player adds a lot of useful bells and whistles, succeeding in many ways as a competitor to iTunes for Windows. A tree-style file directory makes it easy to find the music you want quickly, and a simple search box gets you where you want to go immediately. A five-star rating system lets you rate your music, then organize it by rating,

 so it's easy to group your favorite songs. Drag-and-drop functionality and a handy Create Playlist button take any confusion out of the process of making your own playlists. Creating the perfect mix CD is equally as easy--simply drag and drop songs into a Burn List in the right panel, then click Start Burn to finish. Ripping was reasonably fast on our test machine, and the program let us pick our preferred bit rate and audio file type.

The biggest new feature in WMP11 is the ability to sign up with paid music and video services. Without registering,

 we were able to browse various sites and compare prices among services including XM Radio--all from the Windows Media Player interface. We like the new, cleaner look, and the back and forward buttons make it easier to navigate. The ability to sort music by year released makes for some great reminiscing. Overall,

 we think the latest Windows Media Player offers almost everything you need for every type of media, making it a solid choice for an all-in-one jukebox.

If you’re not a native English speaker or often work with foreign languages, then a little help could come in handy. Portable QTranslate is a small utility that can be of great help. 

The program has a simple interface that should be quite easy to figure out, thanks to the intuitive layout. 

Thus, whenever you want to know what a certain phrase means, you can use one of the available services, such as Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, Prompt, Babylon, SDL or Yandex. 

You can insert text in the app by copying it into the upper field of the interface. The program can automatically detect the language used and translate it to a user-defined language.

Alternatively, you can select a text from any program and press a key combination (Ctrl + Q) to show the translation in the popup window, or to display it in the main window (Ctrl + W). These shortcuts can be modified from the program’s Options area. 

Portable QTranslate also comes with an integrated dictionary that lets you view extensive definitions for any word you want to look for. 

Furthermore, the program can spell check the text as you type it down. Also, it comes with a virtual keyboard that lets you input any words straight from the screen of your computer, thus bypassing any keyloggers. 

You may define the default auto-detect languages by filling in those you use most. A history log may be accessed at any time. Since the program is completely portable, it doesn't need to be installed to the computer in order to work and it can be launched from all types of removable devices, such as flash drives. 

All in all, Portable QTranslate is a nice tool that can be quite useful. Less experienced individuals should find it quite easy to handle, thanks to the intuitive layout.
